Charles Coffin, The Story of Liberty
"You will notice that while the oppressors have carried out their plans and had things their own way, there were other forces silently at work which in time undermined their plans – as if a Divine hand were directing the counter-plan. Whoever peruses the story of liberty without recognizing this feature will fail of fully comprehending the meaning of history. There must be a meaning to history or else existence is an incomprehensible enigma (Charles Coffin, The Story of Liberty)

Ok, now people are sounding more sensible, even I. :)
If there is one thing that the failure of cap-and-trade has taught us, it is that trying to win this battle by lobbying elites behind closed doors is a disastrously losing strategy. Not only did it fail to deliver even weak climate legislation in the U.S., it made climate action look like just another opportunity for cronyism, helping to alienate a large sector of the public.
As 350.org has known all along, the real task is to build the kind of mass movement that politicians cannot afford to ignore. That means showing how making the deep emission cuts that science demands is not some dour punishment that will destroy our economy (as the Koch-funded right is perpetually claiming) but rather our best chance of fixing an economic system that is failing us on every level. Shifting to renewable energy and re-localizing our economies could create millions of good new jobs, while leaving us with cleaner cities and a healthier food system. And as 350.org’s Global Work Party showed, a big part of averting climate chaos involves rebuilding and strengthening our frayed communities – and that is a joyful process.

Moral spending not important?

It amazes and shames me to see how godless so many of us are. That people like Mr. Reid believe moral issues, civic and moral spending has nothing to do with our budget!!?? That how and what we spend our money on is directly correspondent to what we support and believe in!
Pathetic, disgraceful and sinful we are to write off issues of our federal funding abortion in America as a non-issue in coming to a spending budget. What bunch of godlessness that is rampant. I know because I am waking up to this behavior within myself. And yet so many attack people standing for their moral christ-centered beliefs as if it has no ground. But this persecution of Christian beliefs is the way of the world. But God will prevail. And Christ will prevail through us, we the believers whom Christ lives.

digging, searching, engaging.. let's be a proactive peoples again..
a non vote is a no vote.. or more really, to NOT SPEAK up at all of one's views, questions, problems most importantly solutions and ideas for the problems is to.. we all care, so should we not make more an effort to
speak but perhaps first dig for truths.. it's work but if we don't our non-active status leave the vaccum open to be filled with what we have today. But we have greatness in need of more cultivating by we the people quite frankly. I'm really waking up to the fact that I have been neglecting this personal responsibility most my adult life thinking that it was being taken care of so to speak. Well it's been taken care of alright!! We have to take back our place in the the Democratic Republic of this country. The CITIZEN is integril to the system of checks and ballance. All men and institutions are corruptable which is why our constitional framework was developed an we need to be reminded of this and we have not. Thus it's disintigrating. We are waking up just in time thank God.

in response to Ronan’s comment; but then in your suggested scenario when then the boy’s return to school and see the blank walls, what is it in their text books that the school is showing, is it Voltaire, Darwin, religious tolerance, Christianity, Islam, Judaism? I mean is it minority rule or majority rule? This issue is of immense importance here in USA I feel. I really appreciate this dialog on this matter in a reasonable tone and feel what professor Weiler discussed is something that I wish more of the professors and educators, citizens and politicians would revisit more throughly in the like manner.
Here Christians can not have these religious freedoms in all public schools and yet what is taught as fact is Darwinism but not creationism, they have it in the books, in the curriculum, they don’t need it on the walls. It moved from freedom OF religion and majority rules to freedom FROM religion minority rules in the public sector here.
Which is not equality, it is giving validity and more bearing to one view point than the other. For one’s view should be equal here in the US and thus the sum total of the mass should be respected and understood, however not that it alienates anyones freedoms. Yet having it that the minority rule superseeds the majority does not honor the rights of the individual in the majority either.
If your religion is of a minority in our current culture, then you are protected from being kept from honoring your religious convictions. Which is good but when it does not work that way for the peoples whos religious freedoms fall on the side of the majority your are not given this liberty because it some how now turns to become oppressive to the minority. Only that the case really is that the majority is whom being repressed at this point. And this is not true and equal. This is out of balance and false.
I only write this from an Americans view in response to a nice surprise that I can read this blog and see what others are facing as well. I pray for peace about these issues of tolerance and true justice and for us to have creative loving solutions with patient and thoughtful debate to cultivate the most loving and logical outcomes to these and other social differences.

not so sure that this isn't very calculated. Obama is very committed to his Green policies, his track record shows that he has been affiliated with the movement far back in the beginning. He has much vested and some of his closest relationships tie into cap and trade cronies. don't let this wavering fool you.
But he (his administration) also knows they have totally kicked started the effort for new clean energy innovation and industry. And they know more of us, we the consumers have opened our eyes and are engaging more proactively as we should in a free market system. they are pushing the limits of the people by infringing a tad much into the private sector with hinting socialist policies as well. They know they need to back off, not to mention that the whole debauchery of making it so much about global warming back fired terribly. look at the legislation blocking epa clean air act legislation regarding it just last week. (carbon emissions)
they are adjusting their tactics.
But let's not forget that we are in a very fragile state currently considering especially the last handful of years. And that means we can't weaken the current position so quickly that we destabilize the dollar and economy any more than it is already. As much as I believe Democrats would, by force implementing and tearing away our freemarket system, and Republicans would by allowing us to melt away in the stone age of fossil fuels. They both stand to be financially sound if they get their own way. But what about the rest of us ohh what 90%. Also we are just flat out unstable currently. I mean a couple of back to back natural disasters on our homeland right now would spell disaster all right. We couldn't absorb it. we are vulnerable. All the more reason for new industry that can reserect economy.
closing, obama must obtain fossil fuels, to preserve our security, move away from middle east oil dependency most important, set up standards to move away from fossil fuels and into renewable but open up our own reserves to make this transition. If we the people can keep the greedy big oil and coal folks from shackling us to fossil fuel and out of date inefficient technologies, and stop the democrats from monopolizing and socializing the next mega cash crop of the clean energy revolution we will do great. I feel Obama has been so very stand off ish in general lately on all affairs because he's, well they are, waiting for us to move. They are letting the world move so they (both sides of the fence) can get a bearing on which way they can tip us next. We have stay ahead of them though, but it's hard to keep up. they all have so many brilliant well payed minds working for them doing for them what we should be doing for ourselves and this country as citizens. And we are. But keep an eye on em. All of em.

All the world's people will benefit from cheaper clean energy and lower carbon emissions. China and the U.S. will both benefit from the expansion of the global market for clean energy. They will both benefit from joint research initiatives, intellectual property and technology sharing, and the reduction of distorting trade barriers. America happens to be particularly strong in research and tech development; China happens to be particularly strong in economies of scale. Those are complementary strengths that, in a sane world, would produce mutual benefit.
As we look toward the 2012 elections, we must remember that the rules of the game have changed. The national balance sheet is now all the rage in D.C. As long as cleantech seems to conflict with that concern, it will face an uphill battle for federal support. We need to focus on reframing cleantech as China has itself -- developing clean-energy solutions should be seen as competitive advantage that will bolster the U.S. of A over the next century.
